After the tragic bombing last March 4, 2003, Davao City International Airport finally had its roaring wake and return. Having the official name of Francisco Bangoy International Airport, it is now well modernized, characterized by a period extending from a relevant remote past to the present time. It catches hundreds to thousands passengers a day. No wonder why it is known as "the third busiest cargo in the country".
Its usefulness to the whole people of Davao City was being unbent. Facilities were improved for better operation through the loan assistance from the Asian Development Bank and European Investment Bank, and the budget allocated by the government. For four years of construction, its total development cost is approximately $128 million.
Francisco Bangoy International Airport is operated by the Air Transportation Office and is one of the international airports in Mindanao that serves actual international flights in a regular basis. It provides greater topological space to accommodate more passengers wherein its capacity is suitable to 1.2 million passengers and 84.6 thousand tons of cargo a year. Its runway, originally has a magnitude of 3000 meters is now extended by 500 meters and is expected to cater bigger navigation vessels.
With much profoundness, Francisco Bangoy International Airport is evolved with dexterous advanced technological innovations. Access control system, flight information display system, and closed circuit television system are only few of the new and modern equipments our airport has, all for security purposes. For emergencies such as fire and plane crash, the airport has a support rescue building. Also, in case of electrical power loss, a three (3)-megawatt power generator will be used. Unquestionably, these facts display outwardly the royal journey to progress of Davao City as well of Mindanao and of the whole Philippines.
Francisco Bangoy International Airport is located at Brgy. Sasa, Buhangin. At present, its evaluated number of passenger everyday is 1,500. And as far as transportation is concern, the congestion of passengers is mostly on daytime because passengers prefer daytime flights rather than nighttime. The airport has 14 domestic and 14 international check-in counters; all engineered with latest gadgets.
On Domestic flights, Air Philippines flies to Cebu and Manila from here; Cebu Pacific flies to Zamboanga, Cebu, Iloilo and Manila from here; Philippine Airlines flies to Manila from here. While on International flights, Cebu Pacific directly flies to Hong Kong and to Singapore; Silk Air directly flies to Singapore; and Merpati Nusantara directly flies to Manadu.
